Basketball Recap: Erie Takes a Loss

If Erie was riding high fresh off their 70-41 takedown of Niwot last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Erie Tigers took a 63-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Brighton Bulldogs on Thursday. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Erie lost, don't look at Garrett Owen. Despite the final result, he went 8-for-16 to rack up 21 points. That's the most points Owen has posted since back in January. Another player making a difference was Christopher Smith, who had nine points and five boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Brighton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Vance Martinez, who went 9-for-13 en route to 21 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Martinez continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Sickler, who went 6-for-7 on his way to 16 points.

Erie's defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 12-10. As for Brighton, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-9.

Erie wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 51-50 loss against Horizon on the 21st. Brighton does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
