Volleyball Recap: Sophia Sandone and Ginger Gross Secure Win for Clay-Battelle

St. Marys typically has all the answers at home, but on Wednesday Clay-Battelle proved too difficult a challenge. They walked away with a 3-1 win over the Blue Devils. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cee-Bees.

Clay-Battelle had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 21-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-15.

Clay-Battelle was led to victory by Ginger Gross and Sophia Sandone. Gross had 20 digs and nine aces, while Sandone had seven digs and two aces. With that strong performance, Gross is now averaging an impressive 10 digs per game.

They weren't the only good servers: Clay-Battelle was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 19 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least seven aces in 11 consecutive matchups.

Despite the loss, St. Marys still got an impressive performance from Alyssa Winland, who had 19 digs and one assist. Winland is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 12 or more in each of the last four games she's played.

Clay-Battelle's record is now 22-18. As for St. Marys, the defeat snapped their winning streak at 12 matches and leaves them with a 24-11-1 record.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: the Blue Devils beat Clay-Battelle by a score of 3-1 later that day.
