Softball Game Preview: Spring Lake Lakers vs. Fruitport Trojans

After both having extra time off, the Spring Lake Lakers and the Fruitport Trojans will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Spring Lake came up short against Grand Haven two weeks ago, falling 19-11. The loss put an end to the Lakers' undefeated start to the season.

Khloe Melinn made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with one home run, two stolen bases, and five RBI. Melinn is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Raelyn Stratton was another key player, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4.

Meanwhile, Fruitport put another one in the bag two weeks ago to keep their perfect season alive. They never let Kelloggsville get on the board and left with a 16-0 win.

Khloe Courtade made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Courtade was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Kalli Tawney was a standout: she scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Russell, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.

Having lost for the first time this season, Spring Lake fell to 2-1. As for Fruitport, their victory bumped their record up to 3-0.
