Huggins leads St. Peter's Prep past St. Joseph's Prep

Highly-recruited tailback rushed for 205 yards and three scores as St. Peter's Prep avenges 2009 loss.

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) launched its football season Saturday night with a 35-7 victory over St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.) at Rutgers University.

The Mauraders had a shutout until the visitors scored on a five-yard pass with 2:45 left in the game.

Highly-recruited senior running back Savon Huggins (6-foot, 205 pounds) led the winners with 205 yards on 18 carries, scoring touchdowns on runs of 62, 14 and two yards.

Senior running back/safety Sheldon Royster (6-1, 195) scored on a 55-yard punt return just 20 seconds before halftime.

Senior linebacker Dan Lesce (5-11, 225) led the winners with nine tackles and he also broke up a pair of passes.



St. Peter's came into the game ranked No. 1 in New Jersey according the MaxPreps Freeman rankings and St. Joseph's Prep was No. 5 in Pennsylvania. The victory avenged a 40-28 loss to St. Joseph's in 2009.
