Flag Football Recap: Karisma Mendez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Burroughs over Windward

The Burroughs Bears were within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Thursday as they fell 19-13 to the Windward Wildcats. That's two games in a row now that the Bears have lost by exactly six points.

Burroughs' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Karisma Mendez, who threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 58 yards.

Burroughs didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Geneva Kiefer and Isabella Estrada.

Burroughs has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-11 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's defensive effort, having only surrendered 12.8 points on average over those games. As for Windward, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-3.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Burroughs is set to challenge their familiar foe Simi Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Windward will square off against rival Brentwood School at 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
