Baseball Game Preview: Vernon Jackets vs. Holmes County Blue Devils

The Vernon Jackets will square off against the Holmes County Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Vernon has given up an average of 7.3 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Vernon came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 13-4 to Freeport. The Jackets have struggled against the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hunter Dyer, who went 2-for-4 with one run.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Holmes County, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Wakulla 1-0 on Friday.

The result came thanks to Kopper Nelson's shutout, as he gave up just six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 12-11. As for Holmes County, their win bumped their record up to 10-14.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Vernon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Holmes County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Vernon suffered a grim 13-0 defeat to Holmes County in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Jackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
