Basketball Recap: South Decatur Takes Down North Decatur in a Playoff Battle

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but South Decatur had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They came out on top against the North Decatur Chargers by a score of 49-39. This was a revenge game for the Cougars: when they faced off against the Chargers back in January, they had to take a 36-27 loss.

South Decatur found their leader in sophomore Taylor Somers, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 15 boards. The dominant performance gave Somers a new career-high in rebounds. Makalya Somers was another key player, putting up 12 points and seven boards.

South Decatur was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as North Decatur only racked up five assists.

North Decatur lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Madi Allen, who posted 15 points and three steals. That was a full 38.5% of North Decatur's points, marking the third time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Carmen Thackery, who had 16 points.

South Decatur is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a massive bump to their 15-11 record this season. As for North Decatur, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-9.

Looking ahead, South Decatur will challenge Oldenburg Academy at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Oldenburg Academy comes in on five and South Decatur on three. North Decatur does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
