Morrill and Gordon-Rushville are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but not for long. The Morrill Lions will host the Gordon-Rushville Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with five consecutive losses for Morrill and three for Gordon-Rushville.
It was a proper cat-fight when Morrill challenged Niobrara County on Saturday. Morrill came up short against Niobrara County, falling 56-34. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 187th in Nebraska, while the Tigers are ranked 20th in Wyoming).
Loss or not, Morrill got some senior leadership from Ashwin Pittman and Wyler Fisher. Pittman went 6-for-11 to rack up 16 points in addition to six blocks and five boards, while Fisher posted 14 points and five rebounds. That was a full 41.2% of Morrill's points, marking the fifth time in a row Fisher has had more than a third of the team's points.
Meanwhile, Gordon-Rushville played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were dealt an 80-43 defeat at the hands of Valentine. The Mustangs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-16.
Morrill will have to contain Daniel Martins as he made an impact in Gordon-Rushville's last game. He went 10-for-17 en route to 22 points and eight boards. Another player making a difference was Brody Popken, who earned nine points.
Morrill's loss dropped their record down to 15-9. As for Gordon-Rushville, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-16.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Morrill has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 26.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Gordon-Rushville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.7 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Morrill was able to grind out a solid victory over Gordon-Rushville when the teams last played on February 6th, winning 43-32. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Martins, who went 8-for-16 on his way to 19 points and six rebounds. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Morrill still be able to contain Martins? There's only one way to find out.
