Softball Recap: Vernon Beats Pompton Lakes for Their Sixth Straight Victory

Vernon came tearing into Saturday's match with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Pompton Lakes Cardinals a 4-0 shutout.

Miranda Ebbighausen made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Vernon let Hailey Hanshaw and Riley Lazier run wild. Hanshaw went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Lazier went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that Lazier has launched this season.

Vernon lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Vernon's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Pompton Lakes, their loss dropped their record down to 6-3.

Looking ahead, Vernon will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Wallkill Valley at 11:00 a.m. The Vikings are facing the Rangers at the right time seeing as the Rangers are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Pompton Lakes, they will head out to take on Pequannock at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
