Basketball Recap: Zuni Piles Up the Points Against Newcomb

Zuni hadn't done well against Newcomb recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Zuni Thunderbirds really took it to the Newcomb Skyhawks for the full four quarters, racking up a 63-34 win. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 40-13.

It was another big night for Deron Lastyano, who almost dropped a triple-double on 12 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last nine games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ty'Shawn Nieto, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards.

Zuni smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in ten consecutive matchups.

Loss or not, Newcomb got some senior leadership from Savier Thomas and Kinjii Natonabah. Thomas almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds, while Natonabah posted 13 points. Those nine boards gave Thomas a new career-high.

The victory snapped Zuni's losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-8 record. As for Newcomb, they dropped their record down to 6-13 with the defeat, which was their ninth straight on the road.

Zuni has already played their next game, a 73-43 loss against Tohatchi on the 31st. As for Newcomb, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 72-39 defeat against Navajo Prep on the 31st.
