Basketball Recap: Wheeling Central Catholic Picks Up Tenth Straight Win at Home

Wheeling Central Catholic had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.8 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They came out on top against the Charleston Catholic Irish by a score of 69-61. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 64-59 back in January.

Wheeling Central Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaitlyn Blake led the charge by going 8-for-17 en route to 24 points and seven boards. Blake's evening made it five games in a row in which she has scored at least 18 points. Another player making a difference was Seneca Heller, who went 7-for-15 on her way to 24 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Charleston Catholic's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mary Rushworth, who went 9-for-16 to rack up 20 points and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Ali Wilcox, who posted 18 points and five rebounds.

Wheeling Central Catholic pushed their record up to 18-2 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Charleston Catholic, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-4.

Wheeling Central Catholic and Charleston Catholic should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps West Virginia Rankings. Wheeling Central Catholic (ranked 26th) will meet Robert C. Byrd (ranked 91st) at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Charleston Catholic will square off against St. Joseph Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 66 places (13 vs. 79).
