Baseball Recap: Newman Comes Up Short

Newman extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 0-7 in the process. They lost 16-1 to the Edgar Wildcats. The Fighting Cardinals were not able to make up for their defeat to the Wildcats from their previous meeting back in May of 2023.

Newman saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carson Rice, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run. Rice also brought in an RBI, marking his first of the season.

As for Edgar, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. The result was nothing new for Edgar, who have now won seven matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

On Edgar's side, Jase Apfelbeck made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out 11 batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). Apfelbeck is becoming a predictor of Edgar's success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is undefeated (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Apfelbeck was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Edgar let Sawyer Weiland and Lucas Stahnke run wild. Weiland went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one double, while Stahnke went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Weiland a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brock Mauer, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

While Newman had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
