Preview: Bellville Brahmas vs. Seguin Matadors

Two dominant guards in Mackenzie Watson and Desiree Zuniga are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Bellville Brahmas and the Seguin Matadors will round out the year against one another at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at. Bellville has insisted on making their lastthree contests complete nail-biters, turning in a record of 1-2 during that stretch of close contests.

Last Tuesday, it was a hard-fought match, but Bellville had to settle for a 38-36 defeat against Wharton.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Maggie Davoody, who scored ten points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that she grabbed two or more steals. Another player making a difference was Ainsley Hancock, who scored seven points along with 13 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Bellville were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Seguin's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight loss. They were dealt a 71-21 defeat at the hands of Tivy. While losing is never fun, Seguin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1139th, while Tivy is ranked 254th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Zuniga, who scored eight points. She scored a full 38.1% of Seguin's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Arianna Shular was another key contributor, scoring four points along with three steals.

Bellville has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for Seguin, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 4-16.

Keep an eye on the arc in Wednesday's matchup: Bellville have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4.4 threes per game. It's a different story for Seguin, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 threes per game. Given Bellville's sizeable advantage in that area, Seguin will need to find a way to close that gap.
