Baseball Recap: Stoney Creek Victorious

Traverse City West typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday Stoney Creek proved too difficult a challenge. They won by a run and slipped past the Titans 5-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 4-3 on Friday.

Drew Hicks tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

At the plate, Stoney Creek saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brady Smith, who went 1-for-3 with two runs. That's the most runs Smith has posted over his last 12 contests. Jacob Champine also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

The victory made it two in a row for Stoney Creek and bumps their season record up to 10-19. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for Traverse City West, they dropped their record down to 15-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.

Stoney Creek does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Traverse City West, they will host Benzie Central at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Titans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Huskies have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season.
