Softball Recap: Lee County Triumphs

Lee County came out on top against West Johnston on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run first inning. The Yellow Jackets took their matchup against the Wildcats 9-4. This was a revenge game for the Yellow Jackets: when they faced off against the Wildcats on Tuesday, they had to take a 13-10 defeat.

Hailey Hughes was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Hughes was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2025.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on McKayla McDougald, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Lilly-Ann Walters, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Lee County's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-5. As for West Johnston, their loss dropped their record down to 3-3.

Lee County wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 6-1 win against Western Harnett on the 17th. As for West Johnston, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Triton at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hawks have averaged an impressive 11.7 runs per game this season.
