Softball Recap: Petal Find Success

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Petal ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They skirted past the Brandon Bulldogs 6-5. The game was the first time the Panthers have beaten the Bulldogs on their field since April 12, 2022.

Jaley Weathersby spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on four hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Layla Brock and Morgan Taylor did most of the damage at the plate: Brock went 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI, while Taylor scored a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Macey Bullock, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Petal has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.2 runs over those games. Having lost for the first time this season, Brandon fell to 13-1.

Petal and Brandon should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings. Petal will face off against Meridian at 6:30 p.m. on Monday up 117 places (17 vs. 134). Meanwhile, Brandon (ranked fourth) will meet Pearl (ranked 37th) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
