Volleyball Recap: Smithfield-Selma Takes a Loss

Smithfield-Selma was the 3-0 winner over Southern Wayne when they last played one another back in August, but their luck changed this time around. The Spartans fell just short of the Saints by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday.

Smithfield-Selma was was forced to take the loss, but they sure made Southern Wayne work for it, especially in the second set. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10.

Kaylie Gilyardi paced Smithfield-Selma's offense, picking up 17 kills. Gilyardi got some help from Karmen Cyrus and her 32 assists. Liomarys Rivera and Antonella Sanchez kept things locked in from the service line: the pair finished with three aces apiece.

Addison McPhail was a one-woman wrecking crew For Southern Wayne. as she had eight digs, five aces, and one block. That's the most digs McPhail has posted over her last six matches. Lea Carachure was another key player, getting 15 digs.

Smithfield-Selma has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season. As for Southern Wayne, their win bumped their record up to 3-16.
