League recap: Lyford win leads to rise in state rank

Lyford moved up to 720 from 754 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 3A Region IV District 31. The Bulldogs were able to make move up by topping Grulla 28-20.

Lyford made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 7,653 from 7,991. The improvement was the result of 28-20 victory over the Gators last week.

Zapata's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Hawks feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Alonso Gutierrez has thrown for 76 yards this season, while Cesar Ramos has four catches for 64 yards. Mike Alvarez leads the league in rushing with 374 yards.

Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Zapata takes on Jaime Infante's team. The Hawks' offense has scored 132 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Bulldogs have allowed only 140 on the year.

A big matchup in 3A Region IV District 31 this week will be when King takes on Raymondville. The Brahmas are currently in third, while the Bearkats are in first.

Raymondville led the league in scoring this week after putting up 33 points on Zapata.
