Volleyball Recap: Buchholz Starts Season with Win Against Branford

Buchholz gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Branford Buccaneers by a score of 3-1. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Bobcats also won the last time the pair played back in September of 2023.

Buchholz had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15.

Buchholz got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Julia Almond out in front who had six digs and two aces. Almond is also on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted 16 or more in each of the last 15 games she's played dating back to last season. Izzy Carter was another key player, getting 18 digs and two aces.

They weren't the only good server: Buchholz was lethal from the service line and finished the game with ten aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least five aces in nine consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, Branford saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ava Alcorn had 15 digs and four assists.

Having lost for the first time this season, Branford fell to 2-1.

Coincidentally, Buchholz and Branford will both be playing Santa Fe the next time they take the court. The Buccaneers will head out to face the Raiders at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, while the Bobcats will host them at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
