Basketball Game Preview: Gateway Gators vs. Drew Dragons

The Gateway Gators will challenge the Drew Dragons at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Gateway is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.5 points per game this season.

On Wednesday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Gateway beat The Bay School 50-44.

Wyatt Grundland-Lanuza produced another solid performance putting up 13 points and six assists. Those six assists gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hasaan Parker Abram, who posted 11 points.

Meanwhile, Drew had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.5 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They came within a single point of losing the streak, but they secured a 55-54 W against the Jaguars. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Dragons have posted since December 3, 2024.

Drew's win came from a few key players that Gateway will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Charlie Leu, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards. He has been hot, having posted nine or more rebounds the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nicholas Ordonez Reyes, who went 5-for-10 en route to 14 points.

Drew's win bumped their record up to 18-9. As for Gateway, their victory bumped their record up to 14-12.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Gateway has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 23 boards per game. However, it's not like Drew struggles in that department as they've been averaging 37.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Gateway came out on top in a nail-biter against Drew when the teams last played two weeks ago, sneaking past 60-58. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gators since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
