Volleyball Recap: Watkins Memorial Comes Up Short

If Watkins Memorial was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Zanesville last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Warriors took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets on Tuesday. The Warriors haven't had much luck with the Yellowjackets recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Watkins Memorial started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 27-29, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19.

Morgan Cumbo paced Watkins Memorial's offense, picking up seven kills. Cumbo got some help from Ellah Bigham and her 24 assists. Finally, Adalyn Rhodes kept Watkins Memorial's defense grounded, leading the team with six blocks.

Mt. Vernon was led to victory by Callie Swanson and Kiley Compton. Swanson had eight digs and four aces, while Compton had ten digs and two aces. Swanson is also crushing it when it comes to assists: she's posted at least 12 every time she's taken the court this season.

Watkins Memorial's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Mt. Vernon, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.

Watkins Memorial wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 3-0 victory against Lakewood on the 28th. As for Mt. Vernon, they have also already played their next game, a 3-2 defeat against Northridge on the 28th.
