Baseball Recap: Madison County Has No Trouble Against Cottondale

Madison County's game last Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. They blew past the Cottondale Hornets 9-1. The result was nothing new for the Cowboys, who have now won six contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Kannon Plain made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Madison County's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 7-9 when he doesn't).

In other pitching news, Madison County got a great performance from Mar'Kevian Stephens as he tossed 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. The Cowboys are 5-2 when Stephens allows one or fewer earned runs, but 5-8 otherwise.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Alden Richie, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Micah Newman, who scored a run while going 2-for-5.

Madison County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .394. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cottondale only posted a batting average of .167.

The win got Madison County back to even at 10-10. As for Cottondale, they dropped their record down to 10-11 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

Looking ahead, Madison County will face off against Godby at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cowboys' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Cottondale, they will take on Poplar Springs at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
