Softball Game Preview: Newport Harbor Sailors vs. Edison Chargers

Newport Harbor is 0-10 against Edison since May of 2018 but things could change on Tuesday. The Sailors will welcome the Chargers at 3:15 p.m. Newport Harbor is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.

Having struggled with four defeats in a row, Newport Harbor turned things around against Tustin last Wednesday. They never let the Tillers get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. The Sailors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matches by six runs or more this season.

Virginia Peterson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Alexis Vanhorn was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. Kate Shepherd was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.

Newport Harbor hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Edison lost a heartbreaker to Huntington Beach when they met back in March of 2024, and they left with a heavy heart again on Thursday. The Chargers lost 14-4 to the Oilers. The Chargers haven't had much luck with the Oilers recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.

Edison saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Elina Garcia, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Edison's loss dropped their record down to 8-12-1. As for Newport Harbor, their win bumped their record up to 8-10.
