Baseball Game Preview: Durfee Hilltoppers vs. Bishop Stang Spartans

The Durfee Hilltoppers will square off against the Bishop Stang Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Durfee 2.8, Bishop Stang 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.

On Saturday, Durfee came up short against Middleborough and fell 6-1. The Hilltoppers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, Bishop Stang entered their tilt with Bishop Fenwick on Wednesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Crusaders by a score of 7-4.

Landon Cardoza spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Bishop Stang saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matt Burt, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. That's the most hits Burt has posted since back in April. Amir Cartagena was another, going 2-for-3 with one run.

Durfee's loss dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Bishop Stang, their win bumped their record up to 15-3.

Durfee skirted past Bishop Stang 1-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Will the Hilltoppers repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
