5A Region IV District 29 recap September 24, 2013
Alexander moved up to 354 from 482 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region IV District 29. The Bulldogs were able to move up by besting Edcouch-Elsa 28-21.
United South took down Rio Grande City 41-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Isaac Cabello threw for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 67 yards during the win.
Richy Hernandez was the best wideout in the league this week as the Panthers bested the Rattlers. Hernandez tallied 7 receptions for 131 yards. Raul De Leon helped United South's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 75 yards.
Derek Esparza threw for 304 yards and 5 touchdowns. He went 19-28 with 2 interceptions.
Xavione Skaggs was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 110 yards on 31 carries as Alexander defeated Rio Grande City. Teammate Aaron Swain added to the ground attack by rushing for 17 yards.
Esparza put up the best numbers through the air as United lost to Reagan. Esparza's favorite target this week was Eric Corona, who caught 9 passes for 134 yards.
The leading receiver in the league this season is Corona. The United star has 28 catches for 430 yards.
The top two teams in 5A Region IV District 29 will face off this week when first place United South takes on second place United. Last week, Sergio Salinas' team topped the Rattlers, while the Longhorns lost to the Rattlers.
Two of the top teams in the league will go toe-to-toe this week when United takes on the Panthers. David Sanchez's team's offense has recorded 158 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while United South has permitted only 44 on the year.
Joel Lopez's team made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,393 from 4,700. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 28-21 victory over the Yellowjackets last week.
