Winchester Community hasn't had much luck against Jay County recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Golden Falcons will venture away from home to face off against the Patriots at 5:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Winchester Community comes in on six and Jay County on three.
Winchester Community proved they can win big on Monday (they won by seven) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Northeastern 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Golden Falcons have posted since April 12th.
Landen Porfidio made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Porfidio was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
Porfidio wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jace Allen, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Jay County's hitters rose to the challenge against a Patriots pitching crew that boasted an average of only 3.44 runs allowed on Thursday. Jay County skirted past Heritage 11-10.
Joesph Geesaman was incredible, firing off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-4. He also scored two runs, which is notable because Jay County is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Leighton Brown, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Jay County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 9.
Winchester Community's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-3. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Jay County, their victory bumped their record up to 9-10.
Jay County's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Winchester Community hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .338. It's a different story for Jay County, though, as they've only averaged .256. Will they be able to contain Winchester Community's hitters?
Winchester Community suffered a grim 20-1 defeat to Jay County in their previous matchup back in April of 2016. Can the Golden Falcons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
