Softball Recap: Mitchell Has No Trouble Against Spearfish

Mitchell had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Spearfish on Saturday. The Kernels were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Spartans. The Kernels not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 20th (when they won 13-0).

Rylee Jennings spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brooklyn Schlimgen, who went 3-for-4 with two triples, three RBI, and two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Iris Ackman, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one triple.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Mitchell kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.

Mitchell's victory bumped their record up to 3-10. As for Spearfish, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-9.

Looking ahead, Mitchell will head out on the road to square off against Tea at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Spearfish, they will host Jefferson at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
