After losing to the Hammond Skyhawks the last time they met, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. Cardinal Newman walked away with a 49-42 victory over Hammond on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Cardinal Newman.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cardinal Newman to victory, but perhaps none more so than Josiah Peeples, who scored 17 points along with two steals. Elton Smith jr. was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six assists and five rebounds.
Cardinal Newman is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 11-13 record this season. As for Hammond, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cardinal Newman will take on Porter-Gaud at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Porter-Gaud is looking to tack on another W to their six-game streak on the road. As for Hammond, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Augusta Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in their respective states (Augusta Christian is ranked 31st in Georgia, while Hammond is ranked 49th in South Carolina).
