Preview: Commerce Tigers vs. Athens Christian Eagles
Commerce and Athens Christian are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2017, but not for long. The Commerce Tigers will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Athens Christian Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.
Even though Commerce has not done well against Elbert County recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Commerce managed a 58-54 victory over Elbert County. Given Commerce's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 110th, while Elbert County is ranked 259th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Malay L miitchell continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jayla Collins, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, Athens Christian can now show off ten landslide victories after their most recent contest on Friday. Everything went their way against Tallulah Falls as Athens Christian made off with a 65-45 victory. Winning may never get old, but Athens Christian sure is getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Commerce is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. As for Athens Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 15-3.
Commerce came up short against Athens Christian when the teams last played back in February of 2023, falling 62-54. Can Commerce avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
