Preview: Wekiva Mustangs vs. Kathleen Red Devils
The Wekiva Mustangs will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against the Kathleen Red Devils at 7:00 p.m. on February 14th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Florida (Wekiva is ranked 115th, while Kathleen is ranked 95th).
It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Wekiva can now relate to. They fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 46-44. Wekiva has struggled against Horizon recently, as their game on Friday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Tierra Coleman and Sienna Astorino. Astorino had a solid game and scored ten points along with five steals. Meanwhile, Coleman was balling out in the loss, scoring 23 points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Kathleen struggled with threes on Friday (St. Cloud had five more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Kathleen fell 53-40 to St. Cloud.
The losing side was boosted by Amaya Shaw, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Dariasia Pitts, who scored six points along with two steals.
Wekiva's record now sits at 16-10. Kathleen's record is now 18-8.
Wednesday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Wekiva have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 47.6% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Kathleen struggles in that department as they've made 40.8% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
