Baseball Recap: Vel Phillips Memorial Takes a Loss

After flying high against Madison West on Friday, Vel Phillips Memorial came back down to earth. The Spartans fell just short of the Monona Grove Silver Eagles by a score of 2-1 on Saturday. The Spartans haven't had much luck with the Silver Eagles recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

JJ Ackerman was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Blake Adams was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.

Vel Phillips Memorial's defeat dropped their record down to 17-6-1. As for Monona Grove, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-7 record this season.

Vel Phillips Memorial wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 2-1 loss against Middleton on the 27th. Monona Grove has also already played their next contest (against McFarland), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
