Baseball Preview: Wilmington Hurricane vs. Batavia Bulldogs
The Wilmington Hurricane will head out to take on the Batavia Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Wilmington has now lost seven straight dating back to last season, leaving the team hunting for their first win since the 26th.
Tuesday just wasn't the day for Wilmington's offense. They lost 11-0 to New Richmond on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Batavia made easy work of Western Brown on Tuesday and carried off a 16-3 win. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matches by eight runs or more this season.
Brayden Schmittou made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched five innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. Schmittou was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Batavia got a massive performance out of Mason Patrick, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases Patrick has posted since back in May of 2024. Max Mehlman was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4.
Batavia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .615. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Western Brown only posted an OBP of .318.
Batavia's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Wilmington, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.
