Basketball Recap: Washburn Takes a Loss

If Washburn was riding high fresh off their 51-18 takedown of Independent Athletic Ministries last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Washburn Pirates lost to the Cumberland Gap Panthers on the road by a 52-36 margin on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now lost three in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Washburn lost, don't look at Hannah Williams. Despite the final result, she went 8 of 19 on her way to 19 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. Williams has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. Ebany Hill was another key player, putting up four points and six steals.

Washburn's loss dropped their record down to 14-5. As for Cumberland Gap, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-6.

Washburn won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Cosby at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Washburn is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.5 points per game this season. As for Cumberland Gap, they will also get right back to it: they'll square off against Scott at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Scott will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Cumberland Gap surely won't give up without a fight.
