Baseball Recap: Soldotna Takes Down Ranked Kodiak

Soldotna faced Kodiak in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Stars blew past the Bears 13-1. The Stars haven't had any issues with the Bears recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Brenden Theel looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He is becoming a predictor of Soldotna's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-1 (and 4-8-2 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Jackson Koetitz was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Wyatt Gagnon, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Soldotna pushed their record up to 8-9-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Kodiak, their loss dropped their record down to 5-9.

Soldotna will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Bears: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
