Recap: Smyrna Eagles vs. Cape Henlopen Vikings

On Friday, The Smyrna Eagles faced the Cape Henlopen Vikings in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The match between the pair wasn't particularly close, with Smyrna falling 21-6. They were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Cape Henlopen apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2022.

Jacob Tiberi threw for 121 yards on 11 of 19 attempts. Kahmaj Kearney was his top target, picking up 60 receiving yards. On the ground, Chrystian Carroll rushed for 40 yards.

Maurki James was his usual excellent self, rushing for 158 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.3 yards per carry. James is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last four games he's played.

The team's defense also helped out by holding Smyrna to a paltry 208 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Cape Henlopen's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out five times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Quardell Richards and his two sacks.

Smyrna's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Cape Henlopen, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-2.

Smyrna will look to defend their home field on Friday against St. Georges Tech at 7:00 p.m. As for Cape Henlopen, they will head out on the road to face off against Dover at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Delaware (Dover is ranked fourth, while Cape Henlopen is ranked seventh).
