Softball Preview: Aquinas Blugolds vs. Assumption Royals

The Aquinas Blugolds are taking a road trip to challenge the Assumption Royals at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Having struggled with six defeats in a row, Aquinas turned things around against Sparta on Tuesday. They won by a run and slipped past the Spartans 6-5.

Abby Ziolkowski spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks. Those nine strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

Meanwhile, Assumption made easy work of Newman Catholic on Thursday and carried off an 11-1 win. Considering the Royals have won four games by more than nine runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Ari Cavanaugh was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elayna Aue, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Lily Nelson was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Aquinas' record now sits at 6-9. As for Assumption, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.
