Smithfield is a perfect 10-0 against Bruton since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Packers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. Smithfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Bruton will be up against a hot Smithfield team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. Everything went the Packers' way against Jamestown on Monday as they made off with an 11-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Packers, who have now won four contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Cheyenne Debusk was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Smithfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Bruton faced off against Warhill on Friday. The Panthers came up short against the Lions, falling 19-4.
Bruton saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madyson Califano, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Another was Summer Hannam, who got on base in two of her three plate appearances with three stolen bases.
Bruton has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Smithfield, their win bumped their record up to 7-5.
Bruton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Smithfield has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Bruton, though, as they've been averaging 11.4 hits. Given Smithfield's sizable advantage in that area, the Panthers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Smithfield took their victory against Bruton in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 30-5 score. Do the Packers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
