Softball Recap: Santaluces Chiefs vs. Leonard Lancers
Sadly, Santaluces is still looking for their first win of the season after six matchups. Their rough 15-5 defeat to the Leonard Lancers on Wednesday might stick with them for a while. Santaluces was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Leonard apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.
For Leonard's part, Yanina Varela made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. Varela was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Leonard got a massive performance out of Angelixa Stephenson, who scored three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Arianna Sheerer, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and a triple.
Santaluces' defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Leonard, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Santaluces will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against American Heritage at 6:30 p.m. American Heritage's pitching crew has only allowed 0.9 runs per game this season, so Santaluces' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Leonard, they will head out on the road to square off against Palm Beach Central at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Palm Beach Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
