Softball Game Preview: Ascension Catholic Bulldogs vs. Albany Hornets

Ascension Catholic is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Albany is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Bulldogs will host the Hornets at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

On Wednesday, Ascension Catholic needed a bit of extra time to put away Archbishop Hannan. They skirted past the Hawks 10-9.

Ava Gauthe was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Aubrey Delatte, who scored three runs while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Emma Delatte, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Ascension Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .421. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Albany got themselves on the board against Zachary on Wednesday, but Zachary never followed suit. They blew past the Broncos 15-0. The Hornets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Albany is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-11 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.1 runs over those games. As for Ascension Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 19-5.
