St. Joseph's Academy faced Incarnate Word Academy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Angels skirted past the Red Knights 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Angels have posted since September 13th.

If you add up the scores from across all five sets (113-100) St. Joseph's Academy actually scored fewer points, but in the end it didn't matter. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 28-26, 14-25, 14-25, 29-27, 15-10.

St. Joseph's Academy found their leader in sophomore Lily Grothe, who had 13 digs and four assists. Another player making a difference was Frankie Vonderahe, who had 11 digs and one assist.

Despite the loss, Incarnate Word Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kendall Stroer had 19 digs. Those 19 digs set a new season-high mark for Stroer. The team also got some help courtesy of Abbi Koelling, who had nine digs and two aces.

St. Joseph's Academy is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-8-1 record this season. As for Incarnate Word Academy, their defeat ended a six-match streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-7.

As for Incarnate Word Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 3-1 loss against Eureka on the 30th.
