Football Recap: Gilmer Comes Up Short

Gilmer had lost three straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-4 to make it four. They were beaten by the Brenham Cubs 49-7. The Buckeyes were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cubs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in September of 2024.

Gilmer lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Zade Taylor, who threw for 201 yards on 14 of 26 attempts, and also punched in one TD on the ground. 104 of Taylor's passing yards were hauled in by Solomon Jackson.

As for Brenham, the win keeps them at an undefeated 5-0. The result was nothing new for the Cubs, who have now won four contests by 21 points or more so far this season.

Xyran Upshaw continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 87 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries, while also throwing for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Cartelle Brown was Upshaw's top target, picking up 23 receiving yards.

Coming up, after each having a week off, Gilmer and Pittsburg will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. The matchup will give the Buckeyes their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Brenham, they will take on Waco at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. The Cubs will be up against the Lions' rather soft defense (which has allowed 41.4 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
