Softball Game Preview: Southaven Chargers vs. Hernando Tigers

Southaven is 0-10 against Hernando since April of 2019 but things could change on Tuesday. The Southaven Chargers will venture away from home to square off against the Hernando Tigers at 6:00 p.m. Southaven has given up an average of 12.5 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.

Southaven is headed into Tuesday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game last Thursday. They lost 14-1 to DeSoto Central.

Meanwhile, Hernando and Northwest Rankin (ranked 30th and 26th in the MaxPreps national rankings respectively) squared off in a high-profile game on Tuesday. Hernando came out on top against Northwest Rankin by a score of 5-2. The victory was just business as usual for the Tigers, who after 12 games remain undefeated this season.

Madeline Sowell looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Hernando's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Olivia Higginbotham, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Katelyn Kirkpatrick was another, going 1-for-2 with one triple and two RBI.

Southaven's loss dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Hernando, their victory was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-0.

Southaven suffered a grim 13-0 defeat to Hernando when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can Southaven avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
