Softball Recap: Umatilla's Luck Changes for the Better on Wednesday

Umatilla had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They came out on top against the Leesburg Yellow Jackets by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Bulldogs also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2023.

Mittie O'Brien made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. Those 13 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple.

O'Brien wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hailey Bates, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That stolen base was Bates' first of the season.

Umatilla picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 3-7. As for Leesburg, they moved to 8-2 with that defeat, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Umatilla wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 16-3 loss against Mount Dora Christian Academy on the 21st. As for Leesburg, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 5-2 defeat against Tavares on the 21st.
