La Serna is a perfect 3-0 against Whittier Christian since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Lancers will be taking part in a tournament against the Heralds at 8:30 a.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
La Serna made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Gahr, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Lancers were the clear victors by an 11-2 margin over the Gladiators on Wednesday. With that win, the Lancers brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Ava Jimenez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Cann Puig, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one triple. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Paulina Ortega, who scored three runs while going 2-for-5.
Puig wasn't the only one making solid contact: La Serna kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Whittier Christian got the win against Maranatha on Tuesday by a conclusive 12-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Heralds.
Sofia Gonzalez looked comfortable as she struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Alexa Vasquez and Victoria Hinostro did most of the damage at the plate: Vasquez scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Hinostro scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Sofia Hernandez, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Whittier Christian pushed their record up to 18-5 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for La Serna, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. La Serna hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .356. However, it's not like Whittier Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .388. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
