The high school football season got started this past weekend throughout New York State. Thunderstorms and lightning caused delays and shortened games both Friday and Saturday. Some games weren't even played or finished until Sunday.
Here's a recap of some of the more interesting storylines in Week 1 games:
• Let's play two days: Anyone who attended the
Scarsdale at Horace Greeley season opener in its entirety didn't have much time for other weekend activities. The teams played one quarter on Saturday, then sat out a 90-minute lightning delay. They came and played the second quarter before the game was halted again and suspended until Sunday. If that wasn't enough, Greeley rallied to tie the game in the final seconds of regulation before Scarsdale won in the first overtime period,
27-21.
• Jamestown snaps Sweet Home's streak: Sweet Home was very true to its school name for the last seven years, reeling off 39 straight victories on its home field during that span. The streak finally came to an end on Saturday in a 35-28 loss to
Jamestown. Sweet Home's last home-field loss prior to that came early in the 2006 season when it lost by 21-14 to Williamsville East.
• Moretta passes efficiency test: Henry Moretta averaged 13.2 yards per carry, and the quarterback completed three passes in five attempts to lead
Westhampton to a 35-16 win over Harborfields. Moretta, who threw for 34 yards, gained 66 yards on five carries with two touchdowns.

• This win had A-Peel: Bananas played a role of sorts in
Burke Catholic's 29-7 against Goshen as
Matt Przybocki
rushed for 191 yards despite cramping up from dehydration. "It's just
really hot. I needed to hydrate more and eat more bananas," Przybocki
told Justin Rodriquez of the Times Herald-Record. The win also marked
the debut of Burke Catholic coach Kevin Ross, Army's offensive
coordinator from 2004-06.
• Winning debuts: Among the other varsity coaches winning their head-coaching debuts, Jamie Casullo (in
Westhill's 28-20 win over Fonda-Fultonville); Mike Hurteau (in
Troy's 14-13 victory against Averill Park)
• Hamburg's offense, lightning both strike in win: Hamburg's lightning-quick offense accounted for 28 second-quarters points, just ahead of the actual lightning that came and cause its 41-8 win over Lake Shore to be called of at the midway point of the third quarter. It was not resumed.
• Colonie closes out comeback: Colonie scored all its points in the fourth quarter in an 18-10 win over Guilderland as quarterback
Will McCann, who threw for 217 yards, tossed touchdown passes of 11 and 9 yards.
• Marcellus enjoys its own fantastic finish: Running back Ian McGloon rushed for three touchdowns as
Marcellus overcame a 21-point halftime deficit to defeat Solvay, 38-28. Marcellus trailed 28-6 at halftime before scoring 32 points in the second half.
• Carthage gets TDs with Capers: Josh Capers scored five touchdowns, including runs of 65 and 62 yards, to lead Carthage to a 59-21 win over Fulton.
• Underwood goes over 200 yards: Jonathan Underwood's 227 yards and four touchdowns highlighted
Beacon's 36-8 win over Spackenkill.
