Basketball Recap: Mercedes Comes Up Short

Mercedes lost against Weslaco East back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mercedes Tigers fell 60-53 to the Weslaco East Wildcats. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1226th, while the Wildcats are ranked 316th).

Despite the loss, Mercedes still got an impressive performance from Marques Clower, who posted 21 points and three steals. Clower has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Joseph Carr was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Mercedes' defeat was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 8-14. As for Weslaco East, they are on a roll lately: they've won 16 of their last 18 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season.

Mercedes wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 66-48 victory against Porter on the 14th. Weslaco East has also already played their next contest, a 46-32 win against Harlingen South on the 14th.
