Basketball Recap: Akron Drops Highest Score of Season Against Burlington

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Akron). They were the clear victor by a 62-42 margin over the Burlington Cougars on Friday. The Rams have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three games by 20 points or more this season.

Akron had a senior duo take command as Anderson Filla went 9 for 19 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven boards and four steals and Caleb Poss almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds. Those 18 points set a new season-high mark for Filla. Terran Couch also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Akron smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in January of 2024.

Burlington's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Weston Schaal, who posted nine points and eight boards. The dominant performance also gave Schaal a new career-high in assists (four). Darian Mcdonough was another key player, putting up seven points.

The win made it two in a row for Akron and bumps their season record up to 5-5. As for Burlington, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Akron wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 48-45 loss against Wiggins on the 18th. As for Burlington, they will face off against Genoa-Hugo/Karval at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
