Baseball Game Preview: Mattoon Greenwave vs. Mt. Zion Braves

The Mattoon Greenwave will take on the Mt. Zion Braves at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mattoon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.1 runs per game this season.

On Thursday, Mattoon needed a bit of extra time to put away Champaign Central. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Maroons 3-2.

Mattoon got a great performance from Fletcher Gregory as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Gregory has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Isaiah Warrington was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Mt. Zion fell victim to Teutopolis and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wooden Shoes. The Braves have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Mattoon's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 11-7. As for Mt. Zion, their loss dropped their record down to 11-4.

Mattoon came out on top in a nail-biter against Mt. Zion when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 10-8. Will the Greenwave repeat their success, or do the Braves have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
