Game recap

Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.) saw its 15-point lead dwindle to eight, but still managed to hang on and upset Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) 35-27 on Saturday.

After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Terrell Newby in the second quarter, the Eagles led 28-13 at the half.

Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 15 entering the fourth.

The loss came as a surprise for the Knights, which entered the game ranked No. 19 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, while Chaminade was ranked No. 33. Notre Dame came into the game having won one of the past four games between the two teams.

ND's Kelly Hilinski played well. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. His performance brought his touchdown total to three on the year.

CHS's most effective player was Newby. The senior running back ran for four touchdowns. A member of the Top 25 Running Backs, Newby has now scored 13 touchdowns on the season.

A 36-32 Chaminade victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.

The loss comes after Notre Dame defeated Golden Valley 49-6 last week. The victory was a step in the right direction for the Eagles, which was coming off a 44-30 defeat at the hands of Oaks Christian in its previous game. The loss snapped the Sherman Oaks school's 3-game winning streak.

Notre Dame (3-2) will play a Serra game against Alemany next week, while Chaminade (4-1) will take on Serra in a Mission game.
