Casa Grande and Vista Grande are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. Casa Grande will challenge Vista Grande at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Casa Grande is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Casa Grande came up short against Douglas and fell 11-7. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Matt Villa made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Calaeus Perales, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Vista Grande came tearing into Monday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Tigers 9-1. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won three games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Jayan Ybarra spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Angel Rendon, who scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played. Ruben Baca also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Vista Grande kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive contests.
Vista Grande's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Casa Grande, their loss dropped their record down to 8-5.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Casa Grande has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .473. However, it's not like Vista Grande struggles in that department as they've averaged .446. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Casa Grande beat Vista Grande 4-1 in their previous matchup back in March of 2022. The rematch might be a little tougher for Casa Grande since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
